Pattern: X　は　なん　ですか = WHAT IS X?

It's about her NAME so...= おなまえ　

おなまえ は　なんですか　

= What is your name?

ぼく、りーって　います。I am Li.

どうそ　よろしく Pleased to meet you

 

こちらこそ　どうそ　よろしく　It's my pleasure!

わたし の　なまえ は　My name is______

Note the use of の between 2 Nouns:

わたし and なまえ = わたし　の　なまえ = My Name

ありす/Alice　うえだです.　Is Alice Ueda

 

ああ、そうですか。I see...

ぼくは　たいわん　から　きました。

I come from Taiwan (Place から　きました)

うえださんは？　How about you?

Chicago です。I come from Chicago.

Westside　だいがくの　さんねんせいです (Jr/3rd Year).

I'm a junior at Westside U.

Again, linking だいがく and year in school さんねんせい with の

そうですか。Oh, really.

ぼくも　さんねんせい です(I'm a junior too).

Here も adds the sense of "also, too."

せんこう は なん ですか　(What is your Major?)

= Classic X は Y です pattern, here in a Question format with "what" = なん ですか

ぶんがく　です。(Lit) How about you,

Li-さんは？

ぼく　は　れきしです。(My major is History)

So we have "What" Questions here but we don't yet see the はい／いいえ　Question...

but that comes in the 2nd part when the International Student Center person asks Ueda san,

うえださん　ですか？ Are you Ueda-san?

ええ、そうです。In this case, Yes I am.

But if this were NOT the case, then she would say:

いいえ、そうじゃ　ありません

 

Then come the Introductions:

こちら は＿＿＿＿＿です

(As for) This person (he/she) is ___Instructions
